Autographs of the artist Paul Flora in the archive of the Ernst Krenek Institute

From the archive

2022 marks the 100th birthday of the graphic artist, caricaturist and illustrator Paul Flora (1922-2009). He illustrated books, by Peter Hacks or Erich Kästner among others, designed stage sets and worked for various newspapers. Like Ernst Krenek, he was interested in a wide variety of subjects and counted many well-known artists to his circle of friends.

The archive of the Ernst Krenek Institute also holds autographs by the artist: on the occasion of Krenek's 60th birthday, he drew a picture that contains references to several of Krenek's stage works, including "Jonny spielt auf". A reproduction of the picture can be found in the new exhibition in Salon Krenek at Minoritenplatz in Krems/Stein. Later Paul Flora said that it was the cigarette brand Jonny, named after Krenek's world success, which made him take up the habit of smoking.

There are also a few inscriptions by Paul Flora in Krenek's private library, for example in copies of his books "Menschen und andere Tiere" (1957), "Trauerflora" (1958) or "Das Musenross" (1955).

Tip: Starting from 20 February 2022, the exhibition "100 Years of Paul Flora" can be seen at Karikaturmuseum Krems.
