AIR-Fellow James Rushford (AUS) in Krems
The Australian composer, musician, and performance artist James Rushford will be visiting Krems in April under the auspices of AIR-Artist in Residence Lower Austria. During his stay, he will also work on Ernst Krenek’s Buchla modular synthesizer in the Ernst Krenek Forum.
For the Easter festival Imago Dei, he is composing a new work with the title Nupta Cadavera (Marriage with the Corpse) as part of his song cycle for his modified portative organ. The Buchla synthesizer is also employed in this piece. Inspired by the love songs of the fourteenth/fifteenth centuries for portative (Codex Rossi, Tuscan circle), this complex polyphonic work also thematizes the torture practices of the Etruscans and their Court of the Dead in which life was “married” with death in the body’s decay process – a metaphor for musical transience.
