Modular Synthesizer Ensemble

Music education

The "Modular Synthesizer Ensemble" is a social, acoustic, and interactive music project that offers people with no previous musical experience the opportunity to play in an ensemble.

Participants actively work together on a piece of music and are responsible for all phases of the project. They experience the entire process of creating electronic sounds, experimenting, improvising, and composing. The final result is either recorded or presented in front of a live audience.

PROJECT PROCESS
Each project begins with a demonstration of and hands-on introduction to the basics of modular synthesizers. After the introduction, participants work independently on their own instrument. Simple instructions and individual support helps them to develop their own sounds. Then, together, the group creates a composition from the resulting material and rehearses for the final recording or performance.

ADDED VALUE for participants
Working in an ensemble is a dynamic group process that highlights cooperation in achieving a goal. The creative musical debate encourages listening to one another and bolsters social aptitude. Participants have the opportunity to reflect on their own role in the group, enriching each person’s experience of self-realization.

THE PROJECT ON SITE
This is a one-day project that lasts 4 hours.
Group size will depend on Covid regulations and further discussion, with eligibility starting at age 14 years.
The instruments—12 modular synthesizers and a sound system—are provided at Salon Krenek.
