Karl V. at the Bavarian State Opera

There will be a special highlight in February: Ernst Krenek’s twelve-tone opera “Karl V.” op. 73 will be performed at the Bavarian State Opera on six evenings. Erik Nielson will be the musical director, and it will be staged by Carlus Padrissa, La Fura dels Baus, and Bo Skovhus as Karl V; Okka von der Damerau as Juana; and Gun-Brit Barkmin as Eleonore. Many others will also take part in bringing the story surrounding Emperor Karl V, “in whose empire the sun never sets” onto the stage. The topics of the opera, revolving around power, politics, and failures, are still relevant today.
