Concert Tip

Ernst Krenek’s The Dictator in the matinee “New Customs, New Taste: the Reinvention of the Opera” on 8 July 2018 at 11 a.m. in Grafenegg

One of the best examples for the rapid transformation of artistic Zeitgeist is the opera of the 1920s. Pieces such as Jonny spielt auf (Jonny plays on) by Ernst Krenek became famous, but also numerous other stage works made direct references to the political and artistic themes of the time. With three one-act operas by Ernst Krenek and Paul Hindemith, the Grafenegg Academy Orchestra and a select vocal ensemble go searching for traces in concertante form: violence and intrigue, abstract phantasmagorias, and a tightrope walk between religious ecstasy and eroticism stake out the themes of the three works.
