In Brief

Ernst Krenek international

Two heartening reports arrived in the past few days:

For the two internationally acclaimed CD recordings of Ernst Krenek’s Piano Concertos vol. 1 and vol. 2, Mikhail Korzhev was awarded the “Premio Anassilaos Arte Cultura Economia e Scienze”. The awards ceremony is to take place on 11 November in the Palazzo Campanella in Reggio di Calabria. We are very delighted and extend our congratulations!

In the category “important rediscovery of the season”, three Krenek one-act operas – The Dictator, Heavyweight or The Pride of the Nation, and The Secret Kingdom – made it into Opernwelt magazine’s Opera 2017 yearbook. In a staging by David Hermann and under the direction of Lothar Zagrosek, the three short operas were performed to great acclaim in April and May 2017 at the Oper Frankfurt.

Whoever wants to see the opera Cefalo e Procri can still do so on 5 and 7 October!
The premiere, together with the piece Eccessivo è il dolor quand’egli è muto by Italian composer Silvia Colasanti, took place on 29 September under the direction of Tito Ceccherini in Venice’s Teatro Malibran. The two composers approached the mythological depiction of the figure of Procri from Ovid’s Metamorphoses in very different ways – the basis of Krenek’s version was the libretto by Rinaldo Küfferle; Colasanti, on the other hand, found her inspiration in Francesco Cavalli’s Lamento di Procri.

A very successful staging that we highly recommend!
