Concert in Krenek House in Palm SpringsChamber concert with Lina Bahn and Mikhail Korzhev
On 9 April some fifty invited guests came to Krenek House in Palm Springs for a chamber music concert with Lina Bahn and Mikhail Korzhev. Besides the early Sonata for Violin and Piano op. 3 (1919/20), the program included the Five Piano Pieces op. 39 (1925) and the Second Piano Sonata op. 59 (1928). Following the concert, there was a reception in honor of Gladys Nordenstrom Krenek, who passed away last year.
Mikhail Korzhev, whose recordings of Ernst Krenek’s complete piano concertos have been available since early April, has been a Krenek specialist for a number of years. His playing on Krenek’s Bösendorfer concert grand was virtuoso, expressive, and witty, and his charming introductions to the works thoroughly delighted the audience. Lina Bahn proved herself to be an exceptionally competent partner. Through her expressive richness of timbres and confident handling of the complex structure of the work, she lent the music of the yet youthful Krenek a captivating drama that the audience followed with bated breath. The evening concluded in the garden with lively conversations over a glass of wine.
