Opera Premiere in Frankfurt!

Three operas by Ernst Krenek

We are eagerly awaiting the premiere of the three one-act operas The Dictator op. 49, The Secret Kingdom op. 50, and Heavyweight or The Pride of the Nation op. 55 on Sunday, 30 April 2017 at the Frankfurt Opera. The director of this new production is David Hermann; the musical direction lies in the reliable hands of Lothar Zagrosek, who has often occupied himself with Krenek – most recently in 2010 on the occasion of the concert performance of Orpheus and Eurydike in Berlin’s Konzerthaus. Krenek wrote his three one-act operas in 1926/27 immediately following the world success of Jonny spielt auf as “a kind of detailed marginal notes,” as he himself called them. Krenek juxtaposed in them the “tragic opera,” fairy-tale opera,” and burlesque operetta” in compact form. The inner relationship results from the three main male roles: “The dictator is the consummate model of a man who is at home in this world. His counterpart is the king in the fairy-tale, who by nature is intimately acquainted with the irrational side of the world. The master boxer Ochsenschwanz represents a worldy, cheerful caricature of the two in a lower sphere of life,” so Krenek in his work commentary “Meine drei Einakter” (“My three one-act operas”; in Musikblätter des Anbruch 5 [1928], pp. 158–161).
